On August 2, 1987 the Cleveland Plain Dealer's headline story was a homophobic article about the recent rumors pertaining to former Brown Tom Cousineau's sexual orientation.
The article implied that Cousineau left the Browns and Cleveland because the rumors were so ego shattering to him. To be thought of as a homosexual upset Cousineau so much that he became depressed, paranoid and in general" a beaten
man.

Tom and the Browns went out of their way to quiet the sickening rumors. Ted Cappelle, director of security for the Browns conducted a very complex investigation geared toward finding out about Tom's alleged gay activities. found absolutely nothing," said Cappelle. According to the Plain Dealer, out of town reporters even followed Cousineau around at night to see where he went. Modell, the Browns owner was quoted as saying "I think it's a terrible cancer that has plagued him (Cousineau) and he's been victimized terribly by the rumors I didn't believe then and I don't believe today." But he sent out investigators just in case. Cousineau reaction to the rumors at first was laughter and disbelief which then turned to frustration. Cousineau is quoted by the Plain Dealer"There was a time I was looking for a monumental statement, I thought about jumping up and down in Public Square, yelling, I'm not gay.' I thought about taking out a billboard with the same message. I even thought about taking my girlfriend to a packed Pittsburgh Steelers game and doing a male ritual on the field." (?) "I thought to myself, 'Why is this happening? What is it about my personality? Do I act effeminate? Is it my voice? Is it my appearance.

The CHRONICLE is pleased with the response we have received since our debute at Dancing in the Streets. We are still in need of some helpers especially people who can deliver the papers to establishments that carry the CHRONICLE. We also desperately need an accountant who is willing to volunteer a few hours a week to get our books in order. Thanks for all the support ClevelandIt looks like we are going
to make it!
